Fairhaven designed the Micro Vario for paraglider, hang glider and paramotor pilots who want to maximise their flights with minimum equipment.

The Micro Vario will help pilots identify and make use of thermals, and other rising air, so they can maximise their flight times when paragliding, hang gliding or paramotoring. It uses the latest, most sensitive digital air pressure sensors which are incredibly small and immune to temperature change and radio interference.

At only 15 grams and just over one inch square (35x35mm), the Fairhaven micro vario is the world's lightest, smallest and toughest little vario. Small enough to fit in your pocket and forget you have it, so it makes a great backup vario too!

Main Features

  • Great tone range, sensitivity and damping for optimal lift and sink indication.
  • Easily switch between sensitivity settings - no multiple button sequences.
  • Supplied with hook and loop fastener riser/harness fixing and backup strap.
  • USB charging from PC or car - lasts up to 7 days flying!
  • Weight: 15 grams
  • Dimensions: 35x35mm
  • Vario Resolution: 10cm
  • Audio Socket
  • Easy recharge

Audio tones

Tones are typical for an audio vario with a modulated "pip-pip" that increases in rate to indicate lift and a lower frequency "buzz-buzz" for sink. Frequency and interrupt rate vary according to rate of climb/descent. Averaging is typical, at just over one second and tones are loud with the bleeper operating at 8 volts!

The vario can be mounted on the back of your helmet or inside the helmet's collar, to avoiding line snags. You can also fit it to your flying suit or harness, or it can be panel mounted and we supply 5 adhesive hook and loop fastener pads that will stick to most surfaces and can be sewn onto clothing.

It's tiny size makes it ideally suited to fix on your risers, right next to your ear! So we also supply a hook and loop fastener wrap for riser mounting and there's a cord provided as a backup, although the hook and loop fastener is surprisingly strong!

The battery is a 100mA re-chargeable Lithium Polymer type that is automatically re-charged when the vario is plugged in to any USB 5 volt supply, such as a computer, phone charger, satnav lead or solar charger and we include a neat little charger that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter socket.

The vario lights up when charging and a full charge of one hour will supply the vario for up to 7 days of typical use, without having to rely on the sun shining and there are no expensive batteries to buy!

Next to the headphone jack is a sensitivity switch. 3 settings are provided to suit most requirements while being very easy to change. Just slide the recessed switch as required:

Switch Position

Lift tone sensitivity

 Level m/s

Sink tone sensitivity

Level m/s

Max sensitivity

High sensitivity

High sensitivity

Low sensitivity

Lower sensitivity

Dangerous sink warning

Damping (or response time) varies across the 3 switch positions to give a faster response when the thresholds are wider (position 3) and a slower response in position 1 to detect very small rates of climb. Position 2 has an intermediate degree of damping and we recommend this as a starting point.

Headset and volume settings

You can set the vario to match your headset type or external bleeper inside the case.

The Fairhaven mini vario is fully guaranteed for 12 months.

Fairhaven Micro Vario Reviews

Small, light and well-made with a nice sounding and very sensitive vario on 25/08/2020
  • Star Rating
The Micro Vario is a well-made little unit. It's lightweight but feels solid enough. It's vario has a nice sound and is very sensitive, if you want it to be. As well as being extremely light (only 15 grams) and small (35 x 35 mm) the Micro Vario features three easily enabled vario sensitivity settings--max, high and low--which should suit most pilots' requirements.

The packaging is functional, rather than fancy--which seems right for a vario which is meant to give "best value for money"--and the included accessories are very good. Fairhaven has been rather generous with the included hook-and-loop fastener strips with the Micro Vario, five sets in total! There's also a hook-and-loop fastener strap for riser-mounting which is a nice, practical idea.

The included USB car charger is rather dinky and, with its separate USB cable (USB-A to USB-Mini-A), jolly convenient too. Also convenient is the unit's inbuilt rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery (included) which is charged via its USB-Mini-A socket. The unit lights-up when charging, then switches off when the battery is fully charged. We found it took the Micro Vario a little over an hour to get the fully charged from flat.

The Micro Vario comes with a lanyard cord, securely attached to the unit. This is seems like a good idea, even though the unit is very light and the hook-and-loop fastener feels very strong!

Simple printed instructions are also provided in the package with the Micro Vario; these are enough to get you going, but we feel could do with improving a little in places to help you get the most out of the instrument.

All in all the Fairhaven Micro Vario is a great little vario, at a great price.
