Your harness is as important as your wing in terms of its contribution to the handling and safety of your paragliding equipment. A harness isn’t cheap and it has many parameters for adjustment. It really pays to get the best one and to take the time and attention to have it set up optimally.

Harness Selection

Firstly, we can answer your important questions on the pros/cons of different types of harness, seat styles (full seat-plate, mini seat-plate, hammock style, split leg, hybrid), protection options, reserve containers etc.

Harness selection

During the selection process, we will prioritise each of the following aspects:

  • Comfort
  • Weight
  • Performance
  • Price
  • Protection
  • Durability

A useful tool to define what qualities are the most important to you is a radar diagram.

Taking all these factors into account helps you choose between the myriad of harness options:

  • Standard
  • Reversible
  • Pod
  • Mountain
  • Acro
  • Tandem (pilot/passenger)
  • Speed Flying / Riding
  • Modular

Narrowing down the options in this way usually produces a shortlist of 2-3 possible ideal purchases.

Harness Fitting and Adjustment

After selecting the right harness and speed bag size, adjustments are made to:

  1. Speed bag length
  2. Seat plate angle
  3. Angle of recline
  4. Lumbar support straps
  5. Shoulder straps
  6. Fine tuning the chest strap
  7. Setting the waist strap

Hang check

Many flight parameters affected by these adjustments (even more so with a pod harness). Getting the best possible setup is something of an art, because each of these adjustments are interlinked:

  • Comfort
  • Ease of weight shift
  • Energy required to give steering input
  • Aerodynamics
  • Propensity to yaw and twist
  • Stability of the wing
  • Feel for the air

We take the time to explain these factors. Then we check for fitting to the hips, support to the lumbar region and around the shoulder blades, and for an even pressure along the full length of the back with no obvious protrusions, steps, or pressure points.

Harness handling

We will ensure proper setup and compatibility of the harness, reserve and harness-related accessories (e.g. maillons, bridles, karabiners, flight deck, speed system, foot stirrup, speed-bag).

While in the controlled environment of our demo room, you can also explore methods of weight shift and getting in/out of the pod - practicing different techniques with an expert instructor on hand is very informative.

Some pilots prefer to do their own fitting and reserve installation at home - you're welcome to do this after paying in full for your order (if it doesn't fit you can return it for an alternative, if in brand new unflown condition).

Reserve

Setting up a harness requires removal and refitting of the reserve. If you are keeping your old reserve, the service includes removing the reserve from your old harness and a check for suitability/state/condition/age.

The reserve is then refitted to the new harness* ensuring all correct fittings/hardware used.

Reserve fitting

We can also give advice on choosing a new reserve. (See our article how to buy the right reserve), and again will fit it to new harness, ensuring all correct fittings/hardware used.

*If we deem a reserve to be unsuitable or unairworthy then we reserve the right to refuse to re-fit, and recommend that you replace it with a suitable, airworthy one (for reasons of liability and so we can sleep at night with a clear conscience).

The last piece of the puzzle is a harness-reserve system compatibility check or reserve extraction test. This entails sitting in the harness and pulling the reserve handle to ensure the reserve slides out readily. We will also give tips and feedback on your technique to maximize your chances of a positive outcome.
