NeroHero: tough, modern & very beautiful
Icaro 2000 are proud to offer the NeroHero full-face freeflight helmet, which replaces their longstanding and popular 4fight models. The superb fibre glass shell of this new helmet combines lightness with exceptional strength. The finished product is simply outstanding. Made 100% in Italy.
4fight leaves the scene, to a standing ovation. Our helmet with its distinctive tail first saw the light in 2004, and it attained immediate and long-lasting success. As a result of its intriguing appearance and its great aerodynamic efficiency, masterminded by our designer and photographer Ignazio Bernardi, many hang glider pilots used it, above all in competitions, and still today it is the best-selling helmet ever in this sport.
Over the years, 4fight has been made in a number of different models. One of them, 4fight Cut, with a truncated tail, was created for paraglider pilots because the long tail was impractical for their specific requirements. Other versions include the Jet model, and the 4fight MR, in which MR are the initials of Manfred Ruhmer, winner of many hang gliding and rigid wing World Championships.
Even though 4fight is still a very popular product, we wanted to create an innovative helmet that could meet the developing expectations of contemporary pilots. And so today we are proud to present NeroHero, tough and modern, very beautiful especially in the real carbon version. With NeroHero, safety has a new shape.
Use your head, wear a better helmet!
- Icaro 2000
The NeroHero helmet was designed by top freeflight designer, photographer, pilot and instructor, Ignazio Bernardi, with technical consultancy from the most important helmet developer in Italy. The result is a unique, highly aerodynamic, state-of-the-art helmet.
Shell: full carbon or fibre glass
NeroHero is a helmet constructed with the same technology as used in military applications, including high-modulus carbon or glass fibre and high-density polystyrene to guarantee optimal standards of safety.
The polystyrene is very thick in order to pass the most stringent penetration test required by EN 966 certification.
The internal padding pieces are very attractive, but above all they are soft and very comfortable.
Sizes with interchangeable paddings
The NeroHero helmet is supplied with three sets of interchangeable 'internal paddings' of different thicknesses, to cover head sizes:
- S (56cm)
- M (58cm)
- L (60cm)
The size of the helmet is specified by the inner circumference of the internal padding. The size number therefore corresponds to the head circumference in centimetres.
For sizes XL (61cm) and XXL (62cm), a larger size NeroHero is in development.
In addition, we have created a brand-new system to further enhance helmet comfort. Every size is attained by means of 8 small, soft, breathable padding pieces that can all be replaced by 8 thicker or thinner versions. The chin padding pieces are also interchangeable, and have different thicknesses.
We deliver the helmet with 3 sets of 8 internal padding pieces and 3 sets of chin padding pieces of different thicknesses, so that you can be sure to attain a perfect fit simply by changing all or some of the padding pieces.
This system provides another benefit: it is easy to remove the padding pieces and replace them with new pieces. They are simply attached to the polystyrene liner with small lengths of Velcro.
For more details see the Icaro NeroHero quick start guide in the downloads section.
Airflow inside the helmet
There are two small apertures at the front, and two at the back of the helmet, plus two large channels between the internal padding pieces. These features ensure good ventilation for the head inside the helmet.
This helmet is always sold with a visor. There are two versions:
- Transparent visor (included)
- Tinted brown visor (optional)
All Icaro visors are anti-fog, anti-scratch, and have full UV protection.
The transparent visor is suitable for all weather conditions.
The optional extra tinted brown visor is best suited to bright, sunny conditions.
We deliver the NeroHero with the transparent visor and a set of visor fixings as standard.
The optional tinted brown visor can be purchased separately as an extra.
Icaro have confirmed that the NeroHero visor is specific to the NeroHero and does not fit any other helmet model. Also the NeroHero will not accept any other visor model.
Icaro also offer a mirror visor however this is "particularly delicate" i.e. problematic so we do not recommend it. It is also significantly more expensive. If you really want this we can order it in for you as a special order but we cannot accept order cancellations or returns for this. If in any doubt do not order it.
EN 966 certification
The NeroHero helmet was tested by the Italian laboratory CSI, a company authorized by the Italian Ministry of Transport.
This helmet was designed specifically for freeflight pilots, in accordance with the respective European standard (EN 966), but is also ideal for land sports.
Our helmets were designed and built specifically to be as light as possible for paraglider and hang glider pilots. However, the optimization of safety is our primary priority. On pages 7 and 8, the test report shows that the impact measurements for the NeroHero helmet are far lower (and therefore safer) than the Max Peak Deceleration (-250 g) permitted.
For further information about the EN 966 test, please read our page About safety.
In addition, you could take a look at the interesting video we made during the EN 966 tests on the Rega helmet.
- Full Carbon: 790 g
- Pearl White (fibre glass): 830 g
The weight of a carbon or fibre glass helmet has a tolerance of +/- 50 grams, due to slight variations in the amount of adhesive applied to the layers of the shell.
Please remember that our first priority is to optimize safety, and then weight.
We could have used fewer layers of carbon or fiberglass for the shell. But the test report at pages 7 and 8 shows that we are on the safe side: the impact measurements for the NeroHero helmet are much lower (therefore safer) than the Max Peak Deceleration (-250 g) permitted.
