The size of a helmet is always described by the inner circumference of the internal padding. The size number, therefore, corresponds to the head circumference in centimetres.
Icaro Transalp: light, strong paragliding helmet
The video above show top Red Bull X-Alps race athlete Paul Guschlbauer wearing the Transalp helmet during the competition.
Name and design
For the Red Bull X-Alps competition it is mandatory to wear an EN 966 certified helmet. Pilots searched for a helmet that was as light as possible, and they found the TZ model without ear defenders or electronic headsets. Clement Latour, who finished second in the race, was wearing this slightly modified helmet of just 390 grams.
The 3 mm thickness polycarbonate shell has the advantage of being very light but still very strong. The carbon look is just a perfect serigraphy.
The polystyrene has a density of 90 g/cm3.
The weight of helmet depends on the size:
- size XS weighs 400 grams (thicker padding)
- size XXL weighs 390 grams (thinner padding)
Info: Originally the helmet was 340 grams as shown in the video below. For increased safety, Icaro increased the density of the polystyrene and the wheel regulator was added to change size easily.
Flybubble note: we weighed the L-XL size at 394g.
Interchangeable internal padding
Different sized internal paddings (head linings) are adapted to different head sizes. They can be replaced by larger or smaller padding pieces, thus varying the helmet size. This allows you to choose your own size of ICARO tailored inner helmet lining for a safe, perfectly comfortable head fit.
If the helmet is not a perfect fit, the padding can be changed in moments in case a different size is needed. The important advantage: you can easily remove the padding and replace it with a new one or just wash it.
Built-in wheel regulator
The built-in wheel regulator fine tunes the fit.
Covering shell edge
For the first time, Icaro has not used the normal rubber to cover the edge of the shell but have found a method to stitch a strip of fabric around all the helmet. The result is just unique and beautiful.
No visor can be installed
No visor can be installed to this helmet. However, each helmet is supplied with two pieces of hook and loop fastener which can be fixed at the back of the helmet. In this way, you can keep normal ski goggles in position.
Certification E.N. 966
The helmet Transalp is a slightly modified TZ, it has the same certification. The TZ model has been tested by the Italian laboratory CSI a company authorized by the Italian Ministry of Transport and recognized by the German TUV.
All our helmets are designed especially for free flight and microlight pilots, in accordance with the European standards (EN 966). Icaro helmets were designed and built specifically to be as light as possible. However, they optimize safety for hang glider, paraglider and microlight pilots, as shown by the information above. For more information about the E.N. 966 test please read our page About safety.
