Sizing guide
Helmet size refers to the inner circumference of the padding. The numbers in brackets show the pilot's head circumference (in cm), measured with a soft tape as shown in the diagram.
Please note that there are two versions of the outer shell: one for larger sizes and one for smaller sizes. Be sure to choose the correct version.
If you're unsure whether to choose the larger helmet (size 60) or the smaller one (size 59), we recommend going for the larger version. It can be adjusted with the rotary size regulator, even if it feels slightly large at first. The smaller size 59, however, cannot be adjusted if it feels too tight.

The design
Nerv 2.0’s sleek design is created by Ignazio Bernardi in collaboration with Italy’s top helmet development company, Icaro 2000. The process begins with the desired technical features, followed by artisanal methods. The first prototype is sculpted from wood and plaster, then scanned into a 3D file for simulations where colours and details are refined. This data guides CNC machines to cut the outer shell and polystyrene inner shell. The same process is applied to other components, like ear covers and visors. After assembly, quality checks, and testing, the final product showcases Italian design and advanced technology.
Two outer shell sizes, made of strong polycarbonate
For the Nerv 2.0, Icaro introduced two outer shells: a larger version for sizes 60-61 and a smaller version for sizes 56-57 and 58-59. This change increases safety by adding extra thickness to the inner polystyrene shell. The smaller outer shell is 222 mm wide, while the larger one is 236 mm, a difference of just 14 mm, but crucial for passing the rigorous impact tests required for EN 966 certification. The 3mm-thick polycarbonate outer shell remains, offering both lightweight strength and durability.
Inner polystyrene shell
Icaro has increased the thickness of the inner polystyrene shell to further enhance the safety and protection of the Nerv 2.0. Vents on the helmet’s exterior ensure interior airflow, while two channels between the outer shell and the polystyrene inner shell optimise comfort and temperature during flight.
Rotary size regulator
The new rotary size regulator allows adjustment of both the helmet’s internal circumference and its position relative to the back of the neck. It’s easy to adjust and can be done directly by the pilot. Comfort is enhanced by padding on the inner surface of the size regulator.
Interchangeable internal paddings
Icaro has introduced head linings made from the high-tech fabric Coolmax, which wicks away sweat and allows for quick evaporation, keeping you cool and dry. Each Nerv 2.0 helmet features a label guaranteeing this advanced textile, which is also soft to the touch for added comfort. The head lining is easy to change for a better fit, and size adjustments can be made using the rotary size regulator at the back. This internal padding can be removed, washed, or replaced with new padding. If the head lining isn’t the perfect fit, Icaro will send a replacement free of charge, regardless of where the helmet was purchased.
Airflow inside the helmet
The original Nerv was developed from a previous Icaro skiing helmet, where efficient ventilation was essential due to the high energy demands of skiing. This design included adjustable ventilation slots controlled by a thumb switch, combining style and functionality. However, in hang gliding and paragliding, where energy use is lower and pilots may reach cooler altitudes, the new Nerv 2.0 eliminates the thumb switch while retaining ventilation slots to ensure sufficient airflow.
Ear covers
The Nerv protective ear covers are soft, comfortable, and easily removable. They provide extra protection and help keep your ears warm in cold weather. For optimal protection, we recommend always using the helmet with the ear covers in place.
Micrometric chin strap
The chin strap is easily adjustable with millimetric precision. Simply press the red button to release the strap. It is also padded with soft, comfortable fabric for added comfort.
About colours
Polycarbonate’s flexibility in design allows for a wide range of colours and graphic finishes on the outer shell. However, this can result in slight colour variations between production runs. While we strive to maintain consistency in hue, some minor chromatic differences may occur between batches.
E.N. 966 certification
Icaro helmets, including the Nerv 2.0, are tested by CSI, an Italian laboratory approved by the Ministry of Transport, to meet the rigorous EN 966 certification standards. The Nerv 2.0, designed for hang gliders, paragliders, and microlight pilots, is engineered for lightness and safety. While certified under EN 966, it is also suitable for skiing, and Icaro is currently obtaining additional EN 1077 certification for that purpose. For more details on the testing process, see our About Safety page. Watch the testing video here.

Italian-made quality
All Icaro helmets are designed in Italy, made with Italian materials, and assembled by trained personnel in our Laveno workshop. We choose to keep production in Italy, despite the cost, because we prioritise quality—ensuring safety and user satisfaction. Our helmets, trusted by world champion pilots, are a testament to our commitment to excellence. You are welcome to visit our workshop and see the quality in action.
Nerv visors (optional extra)
Visors are an optional extra, made of polycarbonate with anti-scratch and anti-fog treatment. Available in four versions: Transparent, Tinted Grey, Tinted Orange, and Mirror.
Nerv visor fixing system (optional extra)
To enhance safety for paraglider pilots, we've introduced a new visor fastening system. The aluminium disc is designed to project no more than 5 mm from the outer shell to prevent paraglider lines from catching. This modification is also required for EN 966 certification.
An O-ring inside the aluminium disc provides smooth, continuous visor adjustment. When fully lifted, the visor stays completely out of the pilot's field of vision.
Rollbar (optional extra)
The titanium-anodized aluminium rollbar enhances chin protection for the Nerv 2.0 helmet, offering an additional layer of safety for air sport pilots, skiers, snowboarders, and more. The rollbar can be retrofitted to any Nerv helmet by simply replacing the ear protectors.
Fixed to the ear covers, which are securely attached to the outer shell, the rollbar optimizes chin protection by absorbing impact energy through progressive deformation. This design ensures better safety than a rigid attachment to the outer shell, which would disrupt the helmet's energy absorption process.
The rollbar provides a balanced compromise between enhanced protection, visibility, and comfort. It is particularly popular among paraglider, paramotor, and winter sports enthusiasts, offering superior safety without significantly restricting the pilot's field of vision.
