Scope of delivery

NOVA Rucksack. The wing and harness will determine the size of the rucksack. We are offering our high quality and comfortable to carry models in size S (110 litres), M (145 litres) and in L (165 litres).

Fast Packing Bag CITO. Instead of the Rucksack you can also order our Fast Packing Bag CITO. It's comfortable to carry and highly convenient to use.

NOVA windsock. So you know where the wind is coming from, we have added a NOVA windsock. With a length of approximately 80cm it is large enough for a take-off site.

Repair kit. Everyone hopes it will never happen: a hole or tear in the paraglider. We have included a minor damage repair kit in the right colour for such an eventuality.

Manual. We have enclosed a very detailed manual which contains everything you need to know about your flying equipment. Please study it before flying your gear for the first time.

Student Riser (optional). As an option, we offer our Student Riser made of 20mm Nylon webbing. It is more wide, coloured and is more comfortable on the ground.

ION 5 - Evolution of a legend

Making something good even better. This was our aim during the development of the ION 5. The result is a high performance, light and safe wing, which will impress you with its even better handling. Basically, a real ION.

Evolution instead of revolution. The ION 4 is this millenniums best-selling NOVA paraglider. The "ION class" has become synonymous with the ultimate in versatile paraglider. It stands for excellent performance, appealing handling and a high degree of passive safety. With the ION 5, we are raising these strengths to a new level.

Handling and glide performance for big adventures. The ION 5 responds directly to brake inputs and the reduced brake pressure makes long thermic flights more comfortable. The new wing tips and the fundamentally improved stress distribution improve the glide performance across the entire speed-range. The level of passive safety and the intended pilot target group remain the same as with its previous model. This makes the ION 5 the perfect companion for relaxed flights, even over several hours and hundreds of kilometres.

Lightweight. Like the ION 4, the ION 5 has been designed as a semi-light wing. We have built on our proven mix of materials, but a large area of the upper and lower surface is made with the new Dokdo 20D cloth. This cloth is even lighter, whilst simultaneously being more durable. At less than 5 kg (size M), this makes the ION 5 suitable for hike & fly, without having to worry about the longevity of the wing.

Requirements

The ION 5 is suitable for a wide spectrum of pilots. It offers a high degree of passive safety and is suitable for use in schools (as long as your country sanctions the use of an EB B wing for training). On the other hand, the glider has impressive performance, which makes the ION 5 a wing for all occasions. It is a fun wing which turns like a dream, a cross-country machine, a tutor and a gentle acrobat all in one. It is suitable for gifted beginners as well as experienced pilots with cross-country ambitions. The demands on the ION pilots remain constant from one glider generation to the next.

Motor

According to the DGAC (France), the ION 5 will be registered for powered flight. The glider is suitable for both free flying and paramotoring. You can find the certification documents in the Downloads section. Especially for powered flight, we have developed a riser with two mounts. It is suitable for two different hook-in heights.

Useful information

• Like the MENTOR, the ION has become a class of its own - and with good reason. For years, we have been making wings for clearly defined target groups. What is being continuously improved is the performance, handling and the associated enjoyment of flight.
• New wing tip design: The profile has been optimized, the chord is reduced and an additional cell has been added. The result of these measures is increased glide performance.
• Latest cloth innovation: The new DOKDO 20D is 2g/m² lighter and during fabric testing has proved itself to be more durable (in terms of strength as well as porosity).
• Latest line materials: The PPSLS65 from Liros are the thinnest sheathed lines on the market and are used for the brakes and stabilo lines. These aid ease of sorting and reduce drag.
• Optimized ballooning calculation: The wing's ballooning significantly influences the stability, performance and handling. The ION 5 benefits from new modelling and simulation tools have enabled improvement of ballooning and, thus, the wing's stress distribution.

Technology

Flat profile nose. Anyone who tries to fold a piece of paper around a ball will notice that there are always creases. The nose profile of a paraglider is the same - the sail cloth has to adjust to both the profile and ballooning effect (cells are round, not straight). Double 3D Shaping uses additional seams to reduce creasing and therefore increases the performance of the wing.

Optimised cell widths. Smart Cells counteract the variable force distribution within the wing that are caused by the line attachments. In NOVA paragliders constructed using SmartCells, the cell widths have been adapted to the load - basically, intelligent cells. Wings with SmartCells fly more calmly, are more compact and glide better.

Comfort on the ground. All NOVA paragliders are made to be easy to use. For packing you can use a concertina bag, but it is not essential. Our extensive experience with rods has taught us that the packing method has little influence on the durability of the wing. Bent rods quickly spring back into their original shape.

More compact. The aspect ratio of a glider is not the only factor in passive safety, but still a very important one. A high aspect ratio favours cravats after asymmetric collapses, generally shortens brake travel and normally makes wings more difficult to fly. Nova's analytical tools permit us to build performance wings even with a low or moderate aspect ratio.

Light and durable. Paragliders in the Weight-optimised category are lighter than conventional paragliders - but offer the same mechanical stability and durability. These wings are lighter to carry, easier to launch and are therefore suitable for hike & fly. Weight-optimised is aimed at pilots who appreciate light weight without compromising on durability.

Under pressure. NOVA Air Scoop is an optimised air intake, which increases the internal wing pressure. Nova's Air Scoop principle is similar to the ram-air inlet duct on a sports car: increased airflow produces higher pressure. Higher internal pressure in a paraglider means improved performance through increased structural stability and collapse resistance.

Speedbrake Riser

The NOVA Speedbrake Riser is the first three-liner riser which permits the glider to be accelerated as well as decelerated. It brings an end to pulling the C-lines, which killed performance.

We recommend the Speedbrake Riser for cross-country pilots. If you prefer relaxed recreational flying, hill soaring or frequent groundhandling we recommend the standard riser without the Speedbrake strap.

Nova Ion 5 reviews

I found the ION 5 had a nice level of feedback for the class... it’s very reassuring in rough air.

It has very good climb and glide, but the trim speed is not particularly quick - competitive for the class.

I was thinking 'wow, this is actually a very nice fun glider to fly for its class, very reassuring without being too dull and dampened.'

Overall the ION 5 has a very good balance of handling and passive safety, and good performance for the low B class.

If you have gnawing doubts about your ‘high B’ (XC class) wing and want complete confidence in any air, the ION 5 will allow you to concentrate on making good piloting decisions instead of worrying about wing management. If on the other hand, you’re itching to leave your dull school training wings behind and your instructor agrees that you have a good feel for what you’re doing, then the ION 5 will set you free. The sky is not the limit … it’s the beginning of exciting adventures!
