Advance LIGHTBAG Review: The Flybubble Verdict
The Advance Lightbag is a small rucksack made of wing material which weighs just 52 grams. There are a few pieces of paragliding equipment that we wouldn’t leave home without, and this is absolutely one of them.
Advance advertises this as "shopping made easy," however we find the LIGHTBAG is most useful as an ultra-light and ultra-compact way of carrying all your extra bits for flying (keys, wallet, glasses, sun hat, food, drink, instruments, cameras, etc.). Far stronger and more practical than a plastic bag, it weighs only slightly more and takes up almost zero space! It is far lighter and more compact than carrying a full day pack.
The XC Pilot's Secret Weapon
If you plan on going cross country, you’re going to be walking sooner or later (even if you have a very reliable retrieve driver in your life!). The more comfortable the walk is, the less ground-suck you will feel passing over that convenient train station.
-
Ultimate Gear Organisation: We mostly store the Lightbag inside our main paraglider bag. It adds almost no volume to the gear inside, keeping all the loose bits together so you can move everything around much more easily.
-
The "Papoose" Technique: Walking around with all your heavy gear on your back can be unbalancing. By wearing the Lightbag on your front like a papoose, you can shift 3–5 kg of spare clothes, electronics, and water from your main wing bag to your chest. This significantly reduces the effort required to balance and stand upright on steep slopes, transforming a huge chore into just another enjoyable part of the flying experience.
-
Instant Accessibility: Keep your food, water, and phone easily reachable on your chest. You won't have to repeatedly put down and pick up your heavy main gear just to grab a snack while walking.
Durability & Field Repairs
Practically speaking, because it is made of wing material, it’s not going to be the most rugged piece of equipment you’ll own. However, it is incredibly easy to repair with a standard pre-glued wing patch. If you accidentally rip a hole in it, you can repair it there and then in only 5 minutes.
We’ve been using Lightbags for many years—ever since Advance first introduced them—and found that even with extensive use, each bag lasts for several seasons. At the very low purchase price, that’s a massive amount of use-value.
Downsides: The durability as mentioned, plus the straps tend to slip under heavy loads. You can fix this permanently with a few cross-stitches in the strapping, but we usually just pull them tight every hour or so.
Flybubble Rating: 10/10
When lightweight kit is a priority, this bag is an essential. When our current ones wear out, we’ll immediately buy more. For us, despite a couple of minor shortcomings, this bag still rates a 10 out of 10 for being so incredibly useful.
(Pro tip: We actually use two of them—one for all our paragliding extras, and another for the camera gear we use to film our Flybubble video reviews!)
