Supair SAVAGE 2 Paraglider Review

If we could keep every wing we fly, the Supair Savage 2 would be very high on our personal list. We have to keep moving on to new gliders, but this is one we would genuinely consider keeping. It is simply an absolute joy to fly—from the launch to the landing.

The Savage 2 combines excellent climbing ability, lovely handling, strong performance and a remarkably high level of comfort. It feels beautifully balanced in the air and behaves consistently across a wide range of conditions. For us, that makes it one of the most complete all-round wings in its class.

Climbing and Thermal Performance

The Savage 2 is an exceptional climber. It has the same impressive climbing character that made its predecessor, the Savage 1, such a strong performer in weak lift, and we would say it climbs at least as well.

We have flown it in everything from very weak, broken climbs where pilots around us were struggling to stay up, to strong, punchy and quite sporty thermals. Even in more turbulent, surgy conditions, the Savage 2 remains comfortable and composed.

The feedback is excellent. We get enough information from the wing to know where the lift is without it becoming nervous or demanding. It is easy to work the core and make small adjustments, and the wing gives us a very clear sense of what the air is doing.

That makes it particularly enjoyable for pilots who love thermalling, whether that means working a local site, doing small out-and-returns or heading off on a big cross-country flight.

Performance

This is a C-class wing with very impressive glide performance. In normal flying, we found it easily competitive with many of the high-C two-liners around it.

Yes, there are some very high-performing two-liners that will have an advantage at full speed, particularly in competition flying where the final glide and maximum speed-glide performance can make the difference. But that is a relatively narrow part of the performance envelope.

For ordinary cross-country flying, the Savage 2 gives us a superb combination of glide, climb and handling. In fact, when flying alongside some high-C two-liners, particularly those that are not at the very top of their performance category, we don't think the Savage 2 gives up anything meaningful in real-world flying.

And that is where this wing becomes particularly interesting: we are getting very strong performance without having to accept some of the compromises that can come with two-liners.

Handling and Comfort

The handling is one of the things we like most about the Savage 2.

The brake pressure is moderate to light, but the controls are not vague. They are direct, precise and easy to understand. The wing responds exactly when asked, without feeling twitchy or overly nervous.

It is not the most agile or sporty wing we have flown. Something like the Niviuk Artik 7 P has a little more of that quick, jumpy character. But the Savage 2 feels smoother and more composed, and for long flights we actually prefer that.

We get very good responsiveness while retaining a high level of comfort.

That comfort factor is important. The Savage 2 doesn't feel like a wing that constantly needs to be managed. We can let it move around in the air and allow it to do its thing. Even in quite choppy and surgy conditions, we found it remarkably collapse-resistant and well behaved.

We did fly actively when conditions became genuinely rough, but overall we think this is a wing that requires less active flying than many of the two-liners in its performance bracket. It feels sorted and balanced rather than demanding.

Three-Liner, or Two and a Half?

Technically, the Savage 2 is a two-and-a-half-liner: it has a three-line configuration through the centre of the wing and a two-line configuration towards the tips.

In practice, that means it retains much of the reassuring behaviour and handling characteristics associated with a three-liner while delivering performance that can compete with genuine two-liners.

For us, that is a very attractive compromise.

We don't have to choose between a wing that is easy and pleasant to fly and one that delivers serious cross-country performance. The Savage 2 manages to combine the two extremely well.

Big Ears and Tip Stalls

Another nice detail is that the Savage 2 gives us both conventional big ears and tip-stall options.

The classic big ears are effective and easy to use, although they are a little flappy. The tip-stall technique works particularly well too.

We also really like the attention to detail in the line configuration. The different lines are colour coded, including the lines used for the different big-ear techniques. It is a small thing, but when we are on the ground trying to identify the correct line quickly, it makes a real difference.

It is exactly the sort of detail that shows the thought that has gone into the design.

Who Is It For?

We think the Savage 2 is an excellent choice for pilots moving into the sports-class/C-class category.

If you are stepping up from a high B, or you are already flying a D and want something that gives you a little more comfort without sacrificing serious performance, this wing deserves to be on your test-fly list.

It is also a fantastic choice for pilots who simply want to enjoy flying rather than obsessing over competition rankings.

You can take it soaring on your local hill, use it for hike-and-fly, launch it for a mountain adventure, or take it cross-country and make the most of a good day. It is equally happy thermalling locally or flying for hours across country.

And if you are someone who values the pleasure of flying as much as the numbers on the performance chart, the Savage 2 makes a very compelling case.

Competition Performance

If your sole objective is winning SRS competitions and maximising every last fraction of speed-glide performance, there are probably better choices.

At the very highest level of competition, the best-performing high-C two-liners will have an advantage, particularly on those crucial final glides where maximum accelerated performance can decide the result.

But that is not the same thing as saying the Savage 2 is slow. Far from it. It has more than enough performance to fly serious cross-country distances and to do extremely well in competition.

It is simply a wing that puts the overall flying experience ahead of chasing the final few percentage points of performance.

For most pilots, we think that is a very sensible trade.

Build Quality

The build quality is excellent. The design, finish and attention to detail are all first-rate, and the wing has that feeling of being a carefully considered product rather than something designed purely around a specification sheet.

Everything feels refined, from the handling to the line layout and the general finish.

Final Verdict

The Savage 2 is a fantastic all-round wing.

It climbs exceptionally well, has very good glide performance, handles beautifully and is remarkably comfortable to fly. It gives us useful feedback without becoming demanding, and it remains composed when conditions get rough.

Most importantly, it is fun.

Whether you want to spend hours thermalling locally, fly small or large cross-country flights, hike up a mountain and fly down, or simply spend an afternoon soaring around your home site, the Savage 2 does it all exceptionally well.

If your priority is extracting the absolute last bit of performance for competition racing, a top-end two-liner may still have the edge. But if you want a wing that combines performance, handling, comfort, climb rate and sheer enjoyment, we would put the Savage 2 very high on the list.

For us, it is one of those wings that makes you want to keep flying.

A huge thumbs-up for the Savage 2 — a superb, confidence-inspiring and genuinely enjoyable all-round C-class wing.
