The ultralight version of the Companion SQR.

Light, lighter, SQR Light

SQR Light, weighing from just 973 grams, the lightest reserve in the world, comes in 100 or 120 kg sizes. This new light reserve completes the successful SQUARE ROUND family of reserve parachutes from COMPANION. It’s not just the sensational weight, but the small pack volume as well that decided multiple X-Alps winner Chrigel Maurer and successful X-Alps and world class pilots Sebastian Huber, Aaron Durogati and Toma Coconea to take the SQR Light along with them.

Sensational weight, mini pack volume

The SQR 100 (up to 100 kg load) has a surface area of 25.4 m2 for its 973 grams and packs to a volume between 2.5 and 3.5 litres. The 120 size (max load 120 kg) weighs a mere 1171 gm, has 32.4 m2  surface are and a packed volume between 2.8 and 4 liters.

In the X-Alps every gram counts and the SQR Light is the lightest reserve worldwide. That’s why I’ve decided for it.” - Aaron Durogati, double Paragliding World Cup Superfinal winner

Like all SQR reserves, the SQR Light unites the advantages of the classic round parachute with the more modern cross canopy. By their unique design the SQR reserve family open extremely fast, are exceptionally pendulum stable and also very simple and safe to pack.

Square Round: The Best of Two Worlds

The hybrid SQR from Companion founds a new generation of reserve parachute, merging the advantages of the classic round canopy and the cross version into an innovative and forward-looking technology. The SQR has been newly developed from the start, and is precisely directed to meet the needs of pilots and packers.

Companion SQR: The best of two worlds

Countless computer simulations and practical tests have been an essential part of an extensive development process. The result is a reserve with aerodynamically enhanced pendulum stability, not trimmed to track in flight. The standard example the Companion is one of the lightest reserve parachutes at present: but an ultra-light version is under development.

Main advantages

Improved opening

Improved opening

Very fast opening – a result of comprehensive real-life tests.

High swing resistance

High swing resistance

Exceptionally high swing resistance – highly developed canopy with Air-Jets.

Light weight

Light weight

Minimum weight – perfect choice of materials.

Reliable packing

Reliable packing

Simple, reliable packing – like a round canopy

  • Improved opening behaviour and good pendulum stability achieved by aerodynically refined Airjets.
  • Light weight due to careful choice of ideal materials
  • Straightforward packing - similar to a round canopy - using practical packing aids.
  • Not trimmed to track (go sideways) in flight (which most cross / square reserves do)
  • Comparatively few lines for easy sorting.
  • Tested for water landings! A mix of traditional with new low-shrink fabrics means that repeated full function is guaranteed after wet landings.
  • Low descent values and high resistance to swinging as the result of comprehensive practical tests and aerodynamic analysis.
  • Reliable packing thanks to useful packing aids, and simple instructions for the packer.
  • Certified to all flight standards.

The Brand

New, but experienced

Companion is the new brand name for high quality reserve parachutes for paragliders and hanggliders. The Companion brand represents scientific product development. Companion is a joint venture of EVOTEC and ADVANCE, and combines an immense degree of know-how from the fields of simulation, design, test, production and marketing. Providing this experience are paragliding legends like Hannes Papesh, Peter Mack, Mike Küng and ADVANCE.

Peter Mack (Design & Production)

Peter Mack (Design & Production)

Mechanical engineer and CFD enthusiast, with great experience of aerodynamic simulation in the automotive industry; was production manager with NOVA in Hungary for thirteen years. Today he owns the EVOTEC engineering company.

Hannes Papesh (Design)

Hannes Papesh (Design)

Founder member of Nova, active in paragliding for 27 years as designer, has consistently raised paraglider development to a new level over a number of years with his numerical analytical methods and his own design software.

Mike Kung (Tests)

Mike Kung (Tests)

Mike Küng is reckoned to be the world’s most experienced paraglider test pilot. For years he has been active as the test pilot for various testing authorities and brands, and understands the products inside and out, down to the last detail.

Advance (Production & Distribution) Rolf Zeltner

Advance (Production & Distribution)

Rolf Zeltner founded ADVANCE 27 years ago, and has continuously been improving production methods ever since. This brand has always stood for the highest quality products, and is a leading manufacturer of paragliders and harnesses.

The technology

Modern CFD* simulation as analytical method

For the first time in the paraglider market Companion introduces a reserve whose development has been based on authentic computational flow analysis, verified by an extensive progression of practical tests. At the core of CFD analysis is a continuous feedback system, which repeatedly recalculates, many times over, an analysis of the deformation and strain on the reserve in the air, each time taking into account all that has gone before.

This is an important aspect for reserve parachute analysis because these deform a lot due to their pronounced curvature. Our own simulation software and test vehicle makes it possible to make a multiplicity of numerical CFD analyses, as well as deployment tests. At the moment this approach is unique in rescue parachute development.
