Urubu Mk2: An Evolution with a R!

Design

Renewing such a nice glider wasn’t an easy task! The challenge was high: how to propose an improved performance and keeping the proven qualities of the original Urubu?
The Urubu is LittleCloud favourite R&D class, it therefore benefits from all their acknowledge and experience.

The uncountable testing hours made sure the Mk2 matches LittleCloud expectations and were just giving us a good excuse to play in the sky! The result is an absolutely joy !

LittleCloud kept the same base for this Evolution. 57 cells construction is the best compromise they find between, performance, weight/compacity, safety and LittleCloudness ! The Aspect Ratio remains identical with 6.15: this helps keeping a good accessibility and a genuine LittleCloud handling, the performance enhancement has been achieved with other ways. Smart design- no unneeded features, simplicity at its apex!

LittleCloudness: They make toys for fly, not tool!

Enhancing the performance is one thing, keeping the “LittleCloudness” is a priority???? The handling of the Urubu Mk2 is simply incredible, sharp, precise, playful! This is a very important feature for LittleCloud as turning is part of the game! Better enjoy that part! The Glider is superbly balanced, reacting instantly to the pilot order inspiring for improving. The Pitch stability is of course here, like no other brand has been able to reach until now:

  • easy take off even in strong wind
  • easier and more relax to fly in active air
  • less flying incident’s consequences
  • improved efficiency in mushy air

Comfort in turbulence is pretty high, but as always, LittleCloud kept a talky glider to allow the pilot to fully understand the air he’s flying in! A very important safety feature!
Which also helps in light condition to better snif lifting air!

Large brake travel before stall for more forgiving over piloting!

The Glider will only surprise you with its ease of use and its top-notch flying behaviour, giving you the opportunity to safely enjoy new flying experiences and adventures. From hiking and fly in your favourite mountain to flat land flying, the Urubu Mk2 will deliver all you need to fly far, high with a lot of serenity and fun! The only thing that is not included in the package is transportation to get you back home!

Target

The Urubu Mk2 is aimed at pilots looking for a performant, light weight and versatile glider.

For cross country and hike and fly use

The pilot should be able to deal with flying situations, making a proper analysis of the conditions, having good ground handling skills. This would be “EN C pilots” in terms of piloting demandness (according to the EN C Class pilot requirement definition).

For Soaring use

The pilot should be able to control his glider in any wind conditions, being aware of the brake travel, being able to control de dynamic movements whilst wingover, sharp turns.

LittleCloud Philosophy & Certification

It all started in 2008… with Tom’s vision of being able to enjoy flying as much as possible, all year long, and with maximum pleasure, LittleCloud was born. Pleasure, it seems, is something that is often lost in flying… because of the never-ending quest for performance and maximum distance. It has become their mission and philosophy at LittleCloud to deny this quest and focus their efforts on creating products for a community of pilots that pursue the pleasure of flight

A while back, LittleCloud chose to opt out of the flight certification game, except for tandem wings.

The Gracchio Mk3 is not EN certified. Only the EN 926-1 load test has been achieved. The Non certification in flight is a deliberate choice of LittleCloud. LittleCloud think this EN certification is not a guarantee of safety for the pilot. In no case does this certification protect the pilot from flying incidents/accidents. These EN Tests are done in calm air with initiated manoeuvres which do not show the behaviours of gliders in real life: modern gliders are very collapse resistant and their behaviour after a flying incident in a rowdy air mass is very far from what EN tests are showing.
LittleCloud test their gliders in real life for hours and hours in order to evaluate their real capabilities and behaviours. LittleCloud take full responsibility to offer impeccable glider’s behaviours and advise you as honestly as possible on the skills required for their use. Flying remains an aeronautical activity, the gravity factor is the same as any aircraft. Only the pilot, his decisions (weather, gear, flying routes), and his margins can guarantee a maximum safety.

Kiterisers Compatibility

Urubu Mk2 is 100% compatible with LittleCloud Kiterisers system for soaring. Kiterisers bring new sensations, improve accelerated flying understanding, an easy retrofit that you can change anytime.n.

LittleCloud risers

Since 2012, LittleCloud introduce a Y risers that can be connected to each other with a clip. The purpose of this design was to simplify its handling, reduce the possibility of over pulling the “A” during inflation and being able to connect to your wing with the glider still unpacked for those windy days.

Thanks to their compacity, they are a piece of cake to prepare, untangled and connect to the harness. They come with speed system, trimmers, both depending on the glider. For the trimmers version, this Y shape allow an easier manipulation of the trims, as they are set up higher.

They are made of 12mm Kevlar webbing, light and ultra resistant! The brake handles are held in place by raised magnets, making them easy to clean.

LittleCloud Warning

As a paragliding manufacturer, LittleCloud are working hard to push their product development to maximize safety!
Over the years, research has brought significant improvements! But this is only a benefit to the pilots if they are not using this extra gain to push the limits further!
Why? Simply because when they’ll be reached, the consequences will be stronger! The past years, LittleCloud clearly see a trivialization of flying stronger and stronger conditions, stronger and stronger winds.
As great improvements are made on the gliders, they won’t change the reality of the physics!
The best safety will remain your decisions! Improve your skills, improve your judgment on your capacities to understand where you are flying will help improve your decisions!

FAQ

Why not 2 liner?

LittleCloud believe that for this class of glider, a 3-liner is a better choice. The performance gain of a 2-liner for this kind of aspect ratio is not worthing the loss of ease of use and the extra care you need to provide to your equipment. The little extra performance of a 2-liner is only valid is you keep your glider in accurate trim all the time! On top, LittleCloud did notice during their development that you lose a lot of playfulness with a 2-liner setup. LittleCloud is providing toys and not tools for flying, so they choose 3-liner setup!

2.5 liner?

2.5-liner is in LittleCloud eyes the worse compromise of both world! The reduction of line support on the tip increases risk of cravat, because of the larger gap between lines row. On LittleCloud tests, the homogeneity of the 2.5-liner configuration wasn’t at the level of their 3-liner one. To finish with, their 3-line setup is actually consuming less meter of lines than their competitors 2.5-liner.

Why Nylon rods over Nitinol?

The use of nitinol is requiring a lot more attention to reinforcements at this is a very nervous material, which stresses restlessly the fabric! This means the weight you save on one side will be lost on the other. Packing volume isn’t an issue either with nylon rods, because LittleCloud use a reduce amount of long ones.

Why no B to C bridging?

Marketing saying you need a B to C to pilot your 3 liners like a 2-liner is a marketing scam! With or without, you always deform your airfoil (it’s a question of B/C riser legs travel VS B/C tabs position/distance-Pure geometry)!
This is not an issue if your airfoil is designed to work with these deformations! The pressure you need to apply to move the B when you pull on the C is huge, this means you lose a lot of precision, a lot of reaction time and it’s tiring!
If you want a 2-liner feeling, fly a 2-liner! So with direct control on the Cs only, you are faster to react, your inputs are more precise, it’s less tiring and the risers set up is “simpler”. On top, this allows you to play with C stalls to go down!

What about passive safety?

Passive safety is a very vague concept! LittleCloud can help the forgiveness of the glider in having a large tolerance to the stall (large brake travel, strong force required to stall the wing…), a strong pitch stability to prevent the glider to shoot too far (with a limit of course), a neutral glider that do instantly what the pilot is asking for. But LittleCloud can’t build/design gliders that will correct/avoid all the time pilot mistakes.
