The SIGMA 9 cross country intermediate excels in its maximum performance and precision. The distinctly compact wing conveys a feeling of well-inflated strength, especially when accelerated, and flying in thermally active air. The legendary SIGMA series stands for both tradition and progress. This ninth generation is again unmistakable in handling and design.

SIGMA 9 - Compact power

Performing: High performance you can use

Comprehensive SIGMA 9 performance is the result of extensive analysis and perfect finish. The compact setup and high stability allow its exceptional performance to be used over the complete polar curve, even in difficult conditions. This means that you can make the most of the SIGMA 9’s considerable potential to deliver rewarding flights.

Light: Advantages of reduced weight

The SIGMA 9 is the lightest of its class. At only 4.9 kg (25 size) it gets close to being a light wing, thanks to the use of high quality materials and sophisticated design. The SIGMA 9 can be packed smaller, therefore easier to carry, but the reduced canopy weight also has beneficial effects on takeoff behaviour, handling and passive safety.

* Flybubble Note: We weighed the wing and strap at 4.9kg (25 size)

Legendary handling

ever since the first 1989 model the SIGMA has set the sport class benchmark with its sporty and lively handling. The SIGMA 9 lives up to the tradition. Turning is even more direct and precise, especially when centring a thermal at high angle of attack; and long brake travel widens the pilot’s margin of safety.

Features

  • Optimized brake handles with swivel
  • Speed-Performance-Indicator: The SPI is not just an easy way for the pilot to decide the best speed to fly. It can also help the pilot to perfectly set up the speed system in the ADVANCe harness hanger.
  • Different sized risers: The smaller the wing the shorter the risers: smaller people with shorter arms tend to fly smaller gliders – so this idea suits their heights and ideal hand positions for braking.
  • Different sized brake handles: Same principle as the riser lengths – smaller brake handles for smaller wings and hands.
  • Harken speed system ball bearing pulleys: These high quality pulleys reduce the speedbar load and make the system easier and freer to push.
  • Carbon-Speedbar
  • Two-geared speed system: By moving the position of the ball the changeover position from 3:1 to 2:1 gearing can be altered. The speedbar travel and load can then be best suited to the pilot’s dimensions - leg length in particular.

With COMFORTPACK 2

The SIGMA 9 is delivered with the COMFORTPACK 2. Paragliders and harnesses are getting more compact and lighter, and we want to offer pilots suitable rucksacks to go with them. So we have further improved the popular COMFORTPACK and matched the volumes to our range of products. This work results in the COMFORTPACK 2; produced in 4 sizes; 100 Ltr, 115 Ltr, 130 Ltr and 145 Ltr. The new COMFORTPACKs come in one colour: chocolate with vivid blue.

Optimized risers

  • SPI (Speed-Performance-Indicator) with three indicated positions: The SPI is not just an easy way for the pilot to decide the best speed to fly. It can also help the pilot to perfectly set up the speed system in the ADVANCe harness hanger.
  • Two-phase speed system: By moving the position of the ball the changeo- ver position from 3:1 to 2:1 gearing can be altered. The speedbar travel and load can then be best suited to the pilot’s dimensions - leg length in particular.
  • Ceramic brake rings replace pulleys: Lighter and low-friction for easier brake application.
  • Harken speed system ball bearing pulleys: These high quality pulleys reduce the speedbar load and make the system easier and freer to push.
  • Different riser lengths: The smaller the wing the shorter the risers: smaller people with shorter arms tend to fly smaller gliders – so this idea suits their heights and ideal hand positions for braking.
  • Different brake handle sizes: Same principle as the riser lengths – smaller brake handles for smaller wings and hands.
  • Suitable brake handle sizes: By the same token the different riser lengths have suitably sized brake handles, to provide a perfect fit for the hands.

Parapente Mag - "Sporty-Lively"

"The SIGMA 9 is a lively-sporty wing", enthused Cedric Nieddu, journalist and Parapente test pilot. "I haven’t been able to test such a classy wing as the SIGMA 9 for a long time. It’s as if I’d had a Lamborghini to drive. Performancewise the SIGMA 9 is at the top of its class! Incredible precision and unrivaled handling."

Cross Country International - "Performance without stress"

When comparing the SIGMA 9 with its competition Cross Country Magazine concluded that the SIGMA 9 pilot experienced the least stress while flying it – this means that much more of the wing’s potential performance can be extracted. "The SIGMA 9 got my attention from the first moment! This level of precision and manoeuvrabiity as well as its outstanding XC qualities go straight to the bull’s eye!"

Parapente Plus - "exactly what ADVANCE promises....Compact power!"

"Pure efficiency and generous feedback – the SIGMA 9 delivers what it says!" Test pilot Jean-Gabriel Thillard has been comprehensively testing the SIGMA 9 for Parapente +, and declares himself impressed by the stability and high performance of the ADVANCE intermediate. Parapente + awards the SIGMA 9 near-outstanding assessments in handling and flying qualities, and construction and detailing get the high score; "le top"!

Thermik Magazin - "Utmost confidence in the SIGMA 9"

"The SIGMA 9 is exactly what it should be: a kilometer machine, instinctive and reassuring to fly. It climbs and glides fantastically and has truly comfortable, but also exact and crystal-clear handling." In his report Franz Altmann, test pilot and editor of THERMIK Magazine, expresses his respect for what ADVANCE have achieved - putting all these qualities into such a compact and safe wing.

Advance SIGMA 9 (PAST MODEL) Reviews

A great new glider on 16/10/2015
  • Star Rating
It was with pleasure that I recently got my hands a new Sigma 9. Upon opening the bag, the first thing I noticed was the lack of lines. Just 20 and they looked harrowingly thin; however they are obviously good for the job so straight to the hill. Inflating the glider is a joy. Building a wall is easy in the lightest breeze. I was able to reverse launch easily in nil wind, but it also wasn't a handful in strong wind. It does come up quickly and needs braking in strong wind, but this is not hard to do.

In light scratchy conditions I found myself staying up in the lightest lift when others were not. It is so responsive that you can almost scratch with weight-shift alone, cutting in nice and close to the ridge without effort. As soon as things get livelier the wing becomes a blast! It just wants to grab lift.

I have flown it recently in Spain in very strong thermic conditions and it made me feel safe and in control. I had one very small collapse in strong shear, and nothing happened. It came straight out without any drama and I headed straight back to the core. It feels very solid overhead and although the brakes need very small inputs compared to the previous wings I have flown, it didn't react violently with large inputs. It just sort of goes where you put it.

Speed bar was good, although I didn't really find the need for the speed bar marking thing on the risers. Still a nice touch though. Big ears are easy with split A risers and come out without drama. On Glide it is simply astonishing. On one long downwind glide I kept choosing landing fields only to glide over them moments later with loads of height still remaining.

The risers are nicely colour-coded and I already find them instinctive and easy to locate when ground handling. There was one very minor problem with lines catching on the brake magnets but Advance are already one step ahead of me on this and are sending out a new set of risers with a new design for free. The rucksack is compact and comfortable but a tad on the small side for my harness. The glider did not come with a concertina bag.

What I was looking for was a glider that would be fun to fly and good for XC that I could take into the rough stuff without it trying to kill me. The Sigma 9 does everything I wanted and more. It's a great wing from a manufacturer and supplier that looks after their customer. I just can't wait to get out on it again! Well done Advance.
