The SCALA has been developed for hike and fly races like the Redbull X-alps. These are super long distance endurance competitions. The athletes need a wing that is not only superbly performing, but also is very easy in every matter. They need to trust the wing’s stability and safety when they are tired and not that concentrated.
The SCALA 2 light is the evolution of the first version of the SCALA light (X-alps). PHI tuned on many screws to make it even better in performance, easyness and simplicity. The SCALA 2 is a high level EN C class wing! With it’s high aspect ratio and performance the SCALA 2 stands out of the C class. It is a kind of game changer.
But even having that very elegant high aspect ratio, this wing is really easy in every matter! The outstanding feature is the extreme stable airfoil. As more turbulent it gets as more advantage you have with the SCALA 2!

Scala 2 light: THE SUPERLIGHT RACER
Having that very elegant high aspect ratio, this wing is really easy in every matter! The outstanding feature is the extreme stable airfoil. As more turbulent it gets as more advantage you have with the SCALA 2!
Designer's notes
"We learned a lot by developing the SCALA 2 years ago. By working on high performance wings like the MAESTRO 2, we learned further on regarding sail finish and that small details that improve gliding performance. So we put all our knowledge and experience in the SCALA 2."
— Hannes Papesh, Phi Designer
Features
The SCALA 2 light is an evolution of the SCALA light.
PHI improved the rigging system, allowing bigears, a higher load for bigger sizes and a better form stability. The balooning has been optimized further on, as well we spend a lot of work in optimization of rod length, shape and number. The SCALA 2 uses the superlight D10 cloth in bottomsail: so they gained a little weight reserve for more rods in topsail.
The airfoil and intakes have been slightly adapted to improve performance and handling. -as well as the new riser and line attachments system is offering more control at max speed.
The SCALA 2 is made “on top” of the SCALA 2 light: more heavy and rigid cloth, longer and more rods: for even more performance.
Flybubble review
"I had the opportunity to fly the PHI SCALA 2 light ENC in size 19 paired with the Niviuk Arrow harness, I encountered a variety of conditions that put this lightweight two-liner to the test.
Ground Handling: Despite challenging wind conditions, the Scala 2 inflated smoothly and filled out well. Its lightweight fabric caught the breeze but required some management to prevent fluttering. The glider exhibited a tendency for the tips to rise, yet it was easy to inflate and launch, showcasing pilot demands appropriate for its class.
In-flight Experience: Once airborne, the SCALA 2 demonstrated solid performance with minimal pitch movement. It felt stable, resistant to collapse, and had a forgiving stall point, though not as forgiving as some other models. Confidence quickly grew as it communicated its stability and responsiveness in a uniform manner. Despite its higher aspect ratio, it exhibited less movement than expected, providing a sense of coherence and efficiency in flight.
Handling and Agility: The SCALA 2 excelled in agility, making it enjoyable to maneuver and utilize in various conditions. Its efficient turn response allowed for quick adjustments in tight cores, enhancing its suitability for cross-country flights.
B-Riser Handling: Flying on the B-risers felt well-connected, with moderate pressure providing optimal feedback without being overly light or heavy. The inclusion of the speed system offered excellent acceleration, potentially among the fastest in its class.
Descent Techniques: The SCALA 2 light demonstrated proficiency in descent techniques like big ears and B3s, providing stability and ease of use. This versatility adds to its appeal for ambitious pilots aiming for high-performance flights.
Conclusion: The PHI SCALA 2 light stands out as a competitive option in the ENC two-liner class, offering impressive climb rates, thermaling ability, and overall glide performance. While its lightweight construction and efficiency make it suitable for ambitious pilots seeking high-altitude adventures and cross-country flights, transitioning from a high B to this model requires careful consideration due to increased performance and associated risks. It as a top choice for pilots looking to push boundaries and embark on long-distance journeys. While it may have minor ground handling issues, its overall performance and capabilities make it a worthy investment for experienced pilots aiming to elevate their flying experience."

Review of the SCALA 2:
“Launching the Scala 2 with my x-rated 6 harness at 93 all up needs a steady pull, as the glider feels a bit heavy on pull. But still inflates evenly and I didn’t notice a surge, just a bit slow to rise. In the air, the brake travel is short with moderate to hard pressure after 15 cm of travel. After flying nearly all the latest 2 liners, I felt that the Scala 2 felt a bit heavier to steer in the air at 93 all up. The Scala 2 as an EN-C glider, has to moderate and acceptable agility, and is easy to induce a turn in moderate conditions. The Scala 2 feels very compact and in turbulence, it doesn’t require a lot of pilot control, like the Photon.
Conclusion: The 2-liner C category, holds now many new releases, and the Scala 2 adds to the category the flavor of flying a high aspect ratio glider but with a comfortable package. I missed that exceptional nimble feel of the beautiful Maestro 2 and the pleasurable handling of the sweet Allegro! With Its 6.77 aspect ratio, the Scala 2 is created to glide, and the promise is reel."
You are free to customize and choose another riser free of charge but this will delay your order by 3-7 days. If saving every gram is your top priority, you may choose a lighter riser. This reduces the weight on the tech data list but compromises usability and increases speed system pressure.
The rods of the SCALA 2 l are not sensitive against bending, but they are longer that those of the SCALA 2 light. Please pack the wing with more care.
What is the service interval of the SCALA 2? Is a trim tuning needed?
The service interval is as usual 2 years from the first flight. Please fill in your first flight in the type table. On the base of our experience with the lines material mix, there is no trim tuning necessary: the trim does normally not change significantly.
What is the extended weight range?
As the SCALA 2 has a very wide safety margin, we decided to offer an extended weight range. This is offering the possibility to fly the SCALA 2 with more wing loading, still being in the certification range. A pilot may use this option on days with strong thermals with extra ballast, for strong wind soaring or when he generally loves to fly a high loaded wing for more speed, more dynamic energy and more fun. For normal thermal flying it is recommended to stay inside the standard weight range.
