The MAGIC 2 is BGD's high-performance EN-A paraglider. Full of sparkle and magic it has maximum fun-factor and excellent passive safety. It’s super easy to launch and an absolute joy to thermal, with beautiful handling and the right amount of feedback.

The choice of materials and the structural design ensures the glider is robust and durable, and can withstand the abuse of training, but without adding weight – the M size is just 4.8kg.

There’s a well-known saying in the paragliding world: “The best pilot is the one having the most fun”. Fly the MAGIC 2 – be the best pilot!

Target

The MAGIC 2 is designed as a pilot’s first wing; an easy, safe and forgiving glider for pilots progressing in their flying careers. It‘s positioned above the ADAM 2 school wing. It has EN-A safety and easy handling, with plenty of fun-factor and excellent performance. It will take pilots from their first soaring flights, learning to thermal, first XCs and onto more ambitious projects. Pilots will learn to love their MAGIC 2 as they appreciate its thermalling and XC potential, and won’t grow out of it too fast.

"The brief for the R&D team was to produce a wing that is very safe, easy to fly and forgiving of errors. It must be fun and have performance for flying XC: a true ‘progression’ wing. We’re really happy that we’ve achieved this. The MAGIC 2 is a roll-stable glider with smooth, refined handling, and is an absolute joy to thermal.

It is super easy to launch, with no tendency to slow in the rise phase and forgiving of over-enthusiastic pulling of the A-risers.

The long brake travel combined with progressively increasing pressure as you near the stall point, means you won’t stall it unintentionally. It also has no tendency to get locked into a spiral and is generally very forgiving in roll."

ALULA Simulation Software

The future of glider design depends largely on simulations. Instead of designing and producing prototypes one by one, BGD unique in-house structural / aero simulation program, ALULA, enables BGD to accurately simulate hundreds of virtual prototypes. They test over 200 virtual prototypes for each paraglider, using 50 million iterations of the structural / aero calculations.

Progressive stability

Using ALULA, BGD gliders are designed to have a stable and solid center with progressively softer tips. This teaches pilots to predict and avoid deflations and stay aware of the air.

Elliptical Cell Openings

BGD have found that elliptical cell openings give better lower surface tension making for smoother inflation, and re-inflation after collapses.

Weight-optimised ribs

BGD have maintained the strength and rigidity of the ribs while removing unnecessary material. This means less weight for no increase in cost or reduction in strength of the wing. The hole positioning and size depends on the loads taken locally by the sail, and it is thanks to recent developments in their software that it is now possible to accurately calculate this.

Chord cut billow (CCB)

Chord Cut Billow technology has been developed to improve the form friction, glider stability and overall performance of BGD paragliders. Two seams run chord-wise across the top panels of the leading edge. They accommodate the panel ballooning that happens when the wing is inflated. Without CCB, up to five centimeters of excess material is created on the sides of an inflated flat panel when it bends over a wing profile. This results in wrinkles. Chord Cut Billow technology removes this excess material and the 3D panel has fewer ripples and improved rib profile shape and stability.

Triple finger diagonals

Triple Finger Diagonals create a more solid and durable wing. Across the whole chord of the profile, three-piece diagonal supports pass through holes in the ribs. They ensure structural integrity by avoiding the cloth being loaded in the bias direction. This is particularly important near the trailing edge where the profile is thin and shallower diagonal ribs supporting high loads.

Integrated Line Layout

The line layout of BGD gliders is fully integrated into the wing design. Sail and lines are designed together, holistically. The cell widths and the internal straps that transfer the load though the sail are all designed according to the line layout. Even the panel shaping is matched with the line layout though detailed CAD simulation. The result is simple: fewer lines and stronger, faster, safer gliders.

Internal seams

The seams on the top-surface mini ribs are on the inside, where they are protected.

High taper planform

The High Taper Planform is the result of the BGD Performance Project research. The wing's distinctive highly tapered planform (smaller tips) increases glide performance.

Impeccable spiral behaviour

The spiral behaviour is astounding – spiral stability can be a problem with low aspect-ratio beginner wings, but BGD have tested the paraglider extensively, with different inclinations and sink rates, and never, ever has it stayed in a spiral, once! This is very unusual for a school glider and is a big safety bonus.

BGD Performance Project

The BGD Performance Project launched in 2023, with Lucas Bonin’s 6-month sabbatical in the USA. The project applies advanced aerodynamic shape optimisation techniques for conventional aircraft to paragliders, and has resulted in new shapes, profiles, and innovation. 

Baby A-riser

They have added a 'big ears' A riser which is also on a ½ ratio with the rest of the A lines. This facilitates easy use of big ears while helping speed and stability while on bar. The speed system is light and simple without reflex really helping glide at speed.
