MAGIC MOTOR: EXPERIENCE GROUNDLESSNESS
Scoring top marks for safety, the Magic Motor is EN-A and DGAC certified for free-flight and paramotoring. A low-stress wing it’s simple to launch and very roll stable. Its intuitive handling, fun-factor and performance mean it’s ready when you are to expand your boundaries, head off cross-country and explore the world.
Learning to fly can be tough on a wing, so we made the Magic Motor from durable materials. The top surface is Porcher Skytex 38, and the sheathed lines and 20mm risers are easy to sort and handle. The trimmers on the paramotor risers can be opened up for extra speed during powered flight. They should remain closed for free-flight, to comply with the EN-A certification.
Target
‘Groundlessness' in Buddhism refers to the fact that nothing is fixed: in life, in our experiences, in ourselves. We are constantly changing, shifting. Embracing this groundlessness can open our minds to discovery of new experiences. Like flying. Literally becoming groundless for a time, and the unimaginable freedom this leads to!
The Magic Motor is the perfect wing to accompany pilots in this discovery, to quell the apprehension and promote the sense of freedom. But it’s not just for first steps. It is a safe and versatile partner to continue to explore the possibilities on: fly with a motor, or without; stay local or go XC and explore further afield. The Magic Motor is an easy, safe and versatile wing for soon-to-be pilots or veterans, for paramotoring and free flying.
Bruce's notes
"It takes a reassuring glider to make a student feel comfortable enough to add power. The Magic Motor’s inflation and gentle feedback offer this reassurance, on launch, in the air and for the landing. Extra stability in the arc with just the right amount of responsiveness keeps things feeling natural. Spiral stability can be a problem with low aspect-ratio beginner wings, but the Magic Motor has astounding spiral behaviour! We have tested it extensively with different inclinations and sink rates, and it has never stayed in a spiral. This is very unusual for a school glider and is a big safety bonus. The brake travel to the stall point is long (72cm) so pilots won’t accidentally stall or spin the wing either. In short I am very excited about the Magic Motor and sure it will bring that feeling of freedom to whoever flies it."
Features
BEGINNER-FRIENDLY
The highest levels of inherent stability and simplicity of use to make a new pilot’s first airborne steps as safe, fun and easy as possible.
Triple Finger Diagonals
Across the whole chord of the profile, BGD has designed three-piece diagonal supports that pass through the holes in other ribs. They ensure structural integrity by avoiding cloth bias from the ribs and creating a more solid wing even when the brake is applied. This is particularly important near the trailing edge since the profile is thin and the diagonal ribs are shallow supporting higher loads.
Chord cut billow (CCB)
Chord Cut Billow technology has been developed to improve the form friction, glider stability and overall performance of BGD paragliders. Two seams run chord-wise across the top panels of the leading edge. They accommodate the panel ballooning that happens when the wing is inflated. Without CCB, up to five centimeters of excess material is created on the sides of an inflated flat panel when it bends over a wing profile. This results in wrinkles. Chord Cut Billow technology removes this excess material and the 3D panel has fewer ripples and improved rib profile shape and stability.
ELLIPTICAL CELL OPENINGS
We have found that elliptical cell openings give better lower surface tension making for smoother inflation, and re-inflation after collapses.
Progressive stability
Using ALULA, BGD gliders are designed to have a stable and solid center with progressively softer tips. This teaches pilots to predict and avoid deflations and stay aware of the air.
Weight-optimised ribs
BGD have maintained the strength and rigidity of the ribs while removing unnecessary material. This means less weight for no increase in cost or reduction in strength of the wing. The hole positioning and size depends on the loads taken locally by the sail, and it is thanks to recent developments in BGD software that it is now possible to accurately calculate this.
Impeccable Spiral Behaviour
The spiral behaviour is astounding – spiral stability can be a problem with low aspect-ratio beginner wings, but BGD has tested the paraglider extensively, with different inclinations and sink rates, and never, ever has it stayed in a spiral, once! This is very unusual for a school glider and is a big safety bonus.
Snap Locks
Snap Locks are lightweight, compact attachments that connect the brakes to the risers. A small focused magnet inside the catch and an internal locking system hold the handle in place, releasing only if the handles are pulled down towards the pilot. This unique design feature means the handles don’t fall off while kiting, packing, or performing manoeuvres. The Snap Lock system solves many of the problems associated with press studs and magnets.
Baby A-Riser
BGD has added a 'big ears' A riser which is also on a ½ ratio with the rest of the A-lines. This facilitates easy use of big ears while helping speed and stability while on bar. The speed system is light and simple without reflex really helping glide at speed.
MOTOR RISERS
Trimmers and a re-designed geometry make the PPG risers fully optimised for speed and safety. The trimmer webbing and brake pulleys have been designed to be replaceable if they become worn.
EXCEPTIONAL ROLL STABILITY
Designed for progressing pilots this glider has outstanding roll stability. Paragliders are inherently unstable on the ground, added roll stability makes the glider easier to launch and more comfortable in the air.
HYBRID WINGS
Hybrid wings have EN/LTF and DGAC certification, making them ideal for pilots who fly both unpowered and powered. Hybrid wings come with special trimmer riser sets. They are DGAC certified with the trimmers in any position, but the trimmers should be closed for free flight to retain EN/LTF certification.
