Skywalk CHILI5

CHILI5: complete package in a class of its own

Our CHILIs have always offered the perfect complete package: they are the high-tech, performance reference in their class, while remaining easy to fly with a very manageable extreme flight behavior. With the CHILI5 we have succeeded in continuing this tradition. The glider flies intuitively as pilot and glider quickly become a single unit. This is especially noticeable when coring thermals. The core becomes easy to find and the glider climbs quickly.

Additional performance can be called up easily and efficiently in all flying conditions. As the first and only of our EN-B intermediates, the CHILI5 is equipped with the sykwalk SPEED CONTROL that helps XC pilots perfect their flying skills to achieve even higher average XC speeds.

With many innovations and small optimizations, we have once again managed to improve the CHILI in all areas to achieve maximum flying comfort and efficiency. The result is the best CHILI ever.

For the passion of flying.

Relaxed XC flying with a comfortable feeling – balance has a new name.

How does the CHILI fly?

Ground handling is easy thanks to the user-friendly line setup. Internal seams on the mini-ribs increase robustness during ground handling as well as launch preparations.

The handling is very intuitive, and the glider gives you precise feedback, which builds confidence and makes you feel comfortable immediately.

The CHILI5 takes on thermals well, so it’s extremely easy to find the core of the thermal. The CHILI5 is a fast climber.

Brake line input is directly converted. Control travel and braking forces are designed to meet the requirements of thermal and XC pilots, so that you can still make a safe landing after many hours in the air.

In turbulent air, the CHILI5 provides enough feedback to avoid glider disturbances before they happen. This increases safety and keeps you flying on course.

When gliding in active air masses, the wing’s high aerodynamic efficiency can be further increased via the SPEED CONTROL.

When flying on bar you can control the angle of attack via the rear risers and significantly increase your average speed.

Target Group

  • XC pilots
  • Local pilots
  • Thermal pilots
  • Pilots stepping up from the lower B-class
  • Pilots stepping down from the C-class

Construction

In the CHILI5 we use a fabric mix of TX-Light and Dominico 30 DMF, which reduces the weight by ten percent compared to its predecessor, without any disadvantages in terms of robustness and aging resistance. The effect is not only noticeable in your rucksack, it also improves the flying characteristics.

In the usual CHILI manner, the CHILI5 shines with maximum performance, uncomplicated handling and an adequate safety cushion. Good, better, CHILI.

Main features

  • SPEED CONTROL System
  • User-friendly line setup
  • New glider design
  • TX-Light material
  • New structure Internal miniribs

Speed Control

Handle on rear riser which allows the pilot to even out turbulence, speed and pitch while flying on speed bar without having to release the speed bar.

Jet Flaps

Our JET FLAPS extend the green arc as you approach the stall point, which substantially increases safety and also improves climb performance.

Rigid Foil

The Rigid Foil nylon wires on the leading edge help maintain its shape and ensure constant ram air pressure. Advantages: better takeoff behavior, more performance and lower canopy weight.

3D-shaping

A precise calculation of the leading edge geometry and the installation of an additional strip of fabric reduce wrinkling in this sensitive part of the glider. Advantages: exact wing shape, more performance.

Automatic Sand Release System

Porous openings of the profile ribs at the trailing edge ensure that sand and dirt in the glider are automatically guided to the wingtip where they can trickle out. This helps preserve the material and “relieves” the trailing edge.

Mini Ribs

Doubling the number of cells at the trailing edge increases its shape stability substantially. Advantage: fewer vortices improve the aerodynamics and with it the performance.

C-wires

C-wires are nylon wires sewn into the glider over the anchor points of the C-level lines. Advantages: better load distribution, reduced drag, more performance.

Shark Nose

Together with a corresponding wing design, the shark nose technology improves pressure distribution in the canopy substantially. Advantages: much more solid flying feeling and substantial performance gain, especially when gliding on bar.

Riser Güth & Wolf 12mm Webbing

For the CHILI5, we use the proven fabric combination from the CAYENNE6. This material is very robust and makes the glidera lot lighter.

Our line selection results in an excellent mix of ease-of-use, low drag and durability.

We recommend checking the trim after about 50 hours. This way the pilot always flies with the correct trim, which optimizes performance and flight behavior.

Experience shows that the lines with the lowest load can shrink, so we have equipped the C-main lines as well as the stabilo main line with an additional loop, which allows a quick correction at inspection.

Firtted with ERGO brake handle (adjustable in size) with snap fastener and swivel.

Speed Control info

This system allows the pilot to compensate for turbulence, speed and pitchwhen flying on bar without having to release the speed bar. When actuated, the C-lines and B-lines are pulled simultaneously so thatthe glider cannot deform.

A strap connects the C-riser to the pulley on the B-riser. To use the SPEED CONTROL, grab the C-riser above the strapand pull the riser downward. Thanks to the high-quality ball-bearing deflection pulleys, the effort required to do this is minimal.

NB: Only pull so far that the shackles on the rear riser don't drop below the line shackleson the A-riser. Make sure that the C-riser is not pulled down individually, it is essentialthat the entire system is actuated. At trim speed the SPEED CONTROL may only be used as an emergency control.

To simplify launch preparations, we have placed a high value on clarity. The SPEED CONTROL’s Dyneema bridle lines are wrapped in a neoprene cover so that nothing can dangleand get tangled up during ground handling.

For double protection we have secured the B-level with an additional strap.

Compared to its predecessor

  • On the ground: Launch preparations as well as ground handling are easier due to the user-friendly line setup. The glider has simple launch behavior.
  • Handling: The CHILI5 is similar in character to its predecessor and very intuitive, yet the CHIL5 flies even more precisely. Thanks to the new tension distribution, the CHILI5 feels more relaxed in turbulence as well as on bar.
  • Performance: Typical for the CHILI series, the CHILI5 handles thermals well. The glider can be turned tightly in the core of the thermal and climb performance is enormous. Compared to the CHILI4, the CHILI5 once again steps up performance at trim speed and on bar.
  • Speed Control system: We have installed our SPEED CONTROL for the first time in a B-glider. This system reacts smoothly and makes the glider easy to stabilize and steer while flying on bar. With the SPEED CONTROL you can fly on bar very efficiently and achieve a higher average speed over long distances.
  • Extreme flight: The CHILI5 has manageable extreme flight characteristics and no special features to note.
  • SIV training: Side and front collapses are easier to handle than with its predecessor. The B-stall is easy to perform, for this it is best to grab the lines via the line shackles. Full stall: the canopy stalls flat via wingspan. The spiral is easier to control.

Flybubble review

"One of the key things that the CHILI5 has that the CHILI4 didn't  and the first time in the Skywalk range for a High B glider to have is a BC system. So the Skywalk CHILI5, it's handling I'd say is, it's got the brake pressure is a moderate to light brake pressure. It's got a moderate to longish travel, not short and it's not very long. The first part of the travel works very nicely for most of your turns and thermalling. The agility is kind of moderately agile. It's not sort of too slow and planky either. It's somewhere in between.

It does feel very taut and solid. It gives you a feeling. It's got a very reassuring feeling about it, quite calm. The feedback is moderate. It's not a high feedback glider, but it's not a very, it's not a sort of really dampened sort of glider that you can't feel what's happening either. It's kind of, you know, in the middle of that sort of range. The glide is excellent across the speed range. I've been very impressed with it. Yeah, the CHILI5 is very pitch stable. When you're flying in active air  it actually sits above your head quite steadily. It's pretty steady above your head. It bites into thermals pretty nicely. Soaring-wise, the CHILI5 does very well. I would put the tendency slightly more on the, in the weaker and moderate climbs, it climbs particularly well. In the stronger climbs, maybe it's got a little bit of a tendency to get knocked out a bit. You need to make sure that you're keeping in the core. That's my feeling.

Speed bar is very light and efficient and feels very, comes on very smooth. It's very light to push on and all the way through the travel. The BC control system, a fairly usual kind of system. And the pressure I found is moderate to heavy. Like most of these BC systems, it's quite, it's a little bit stiff, so you can certainly use it and it works very effectively.

So the CHILI5, I think it's an ideal glider for some somebody, especially if they're stepping up from a Low or Mid B  and they're wanting to go up into the High B class but don't want something that's too demanding or too sporty and active feeling, and they prefer something that's kind of got a more reassuring feeling about it, then that's a perfect candidate. Also if somebody who's got a High B glider and got maybe one of the higher sportier end of High Bs and find it a bit much, they might find that the CHILI5 suits them better.

Overall, the Skywalk CHILI5, I think it's an excellent High B wing. I'm really impressed with it. It's a very great all around High B wing. So yeah, very impressed. Very nice glider. If you're a pilot that really likes a glider that's very agile and very nimble, then you might find the CHILI 5 is kind of lacking a little bit in that area. But if you want a glider that's sporty and agile, then you might find the CHILI5  is a little bit, you know, you want a bit more sportiness and agility than that. But as I say again, the CHILI5 it's got a nice moderate level agility. One minus side: The breaks have got poppers!  I prefer magnets."

“The Chili 5 is a textbook high-end intermediate. Agile but not demanding to fly, even in turbulent conditions. Launching is super easy and at the landing the glider can be flown at low speeds without losing control. Add to the package the excellent build quality and modest weight. This is a no stress, just go fly and have fun glider. “

— Erwin Voogt, CROSS COUNTRY MAGAZINE 226 (full review)

“Conclusion: Skywalk has built a very comfortable high-performance B glider. The Chili 5 doesn’t require a lot of active control while delivering excellent overall performance for the B category. I can confirm that I can put it with some mid-Bs in terms of comfort and accessibility.

The Package of the climb, glide performance, and huge comfort are very wide in the high B category. The top speed is really good and a bit hard to push at the second bar. Other than that… Fly the Chili 5 near the top weight for efficiency, and you will experience an excellent XC machine that saves you a lot of energy, keeping you gliding toward the sunset.“
