Nova ARTUS Paragliding Harness Review

Sharing our thoughts on NOVA's ultralight pod harness, the ARTUS! Though we’re calling it a first impressions review, Carlo and Nancy have actually put it through plenty of testing already!

The Nova ARTUS is Nova's own ultralight pod harness, complete with a full tail fairing. As you can see in the video, it fits into Nova XPACK 50 (a 50L bag, which is fairly compact). I had to attach the helmet outside, though it could fit inside if arranged differently. I’ve also packed in an AirDesign Volt 5 glider. This harness is designed for pilots seeking something light, compact, and high-performing. With its well-sized tail fin and streamlined, narrow profile, it’s an aerodynamic option ideal for cross-country flying, hike-and-fly, and even hike-and-fly races.

In the past, I haven’t been particularly impressed with some of Nova's other harnesses, so I was curious to see how the ARTUS would compare. Harness design seems even more challenging than glider design, so I was a bit cautious. I know Nova took a couple of years to develop this harness, which I think paid off. I wish more manufacturers would put this level of care into development—making sure a harness is fully ready before launching it on the market.

Build Quality

I’m genuinely impressed; the ARTUS is exceptionally well-made, with attention to detail that suggests it will last. Nova avoided the mistake of shaving off extra grams, maintaining a solid balance of ultra-lightweight and durability. This harness feels like one that a careful pilot could use every day. Personally, I’d be very happy to have this as my go-to harness.

The ARTUS has a sleek, clean look, and Nova has put real effort into the finish and detailing. They’ve also made it simple to fasten the harness. I’d recommend starting with the green strap on the right, followed by the red strap on the left. Nova has smartly chosen darker and lighter shades, which is helpful even for color-blind pilots.

Safety

Next, the integrated safety and closing system is straightforward to set up, and the cockpit is simple to close. Once everything is in place, the ARTUS feels secure. Nova even includes an elastic loop for your leg, which we forgot to use a few times, but it helps prevent kicking the footplate upside down when extending your foot. The harness is easy to enter and exit, with smooth handling and a natural feel on the ground and in the air.

Comfort and Handling

The ARTUS surprised us with its comfort level, especially since other newer harness manufacturers often end up with pressure points or uneven areas. With the ARTUS, comfort is exceptional. It’s a split-leg harness, but it feels more like a hammock-style, which we find very comfortable. Adjustments, like the seat angle and shoulder straps, are also easy to make mid-air, providing a customized fit.

In terms of handling, the ARTUS hits a sweet spot. It’s neither too tippy nor too dampened; it offers a smooth balance with moderate agility. The harness has a nice progressive range throughout weight shifts, allowing for precise control. It also handles wingovers and tight turns with authority, which is impressive for an ultralight pod harness. Getting on the speed bar is one of the easiest We’ve experienced—both smooth and comfortable, even at full speed while using rear risers.

The rear fairing inflates quickly, sits nicely, and adds to the streamlined, aerodynamic profile. The ARTUS also has ample storage, including roomy side pockets. One minor issue is that the side pocket zippers require a bit of finesse to use, especially when curved, but overall, the storage design is well thought out. The ARTUS lacks pockets inside the speed bag and on the nose cone, but this isn’t a drawback for us.

The back protection

The Artus comes with Nova's "ALUMINA+" protector fitted as standard, weight 235g. This "hybrid" two-part back protector system extends along the thighs and back right up to the thoracic spine. It consists of PE foam and a very light tubular structure made of aluminium. For an even smaller pack volume, you can optionally replace the main protector with the inflatable ARTUS AIR protector, 385g.

Summary

In summary, the Nova ARTUS is perfect for cross-country pilots seeking a high-performing, ultralight harness that’s comfortable, portable, and packed with features.
